An example of this collaboration is the partnership between WIRES and Woolworths, working together to support environmental sustainability through the Rescue Food Program.

Inspired by the student-led protests of the era, Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States envisioned a national day dedicated to environmental education and activism. Since then, World Earth Day has evolved into a global phenomenon, observed by over 190 countries yearly. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship and collective action in addressing our planet's pressing challenges.

WIRES and Woolworths have joined forces to make a meaningful impact through the Rescue Food Program in combating food waste and supporting rescued wildlife. This initiative addresses the urgent issue of excess food waste and is crucial in sustaining Australia's diverse native wildlife.

The Rescue Food Program brings together Woolworths' resources and reach with WIRES' wildlife rescue and rehabilitation expertise. By repurposing surplus meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables from Woolworths stores, the program provides essential nourishment for rescued native animals while reducing food wastage.

Making a Difference, One Meal at a Time

The Rescue Food Program's impact extends far beyond mere numbers. It is a lifeline for wildlife rescue groups across Australia, supporting over 1,300 wildlife carers annually. The program efficiently distributes surplus food to over 100 wildlife rescue groups, enabling them to rescue and care for thousands of animals annually.

From sustaining critically endangered species like the Spectacled Flying Foxes to alleviating the financial burden on wildlife carers, the Rescue Food Program is making a tangible difference in the lives of animals and humans.
