Who Can Enrol
Inclusivity in Action
To join the Rescue and Immediate Care Course, individuals must be 18 years or older and reside in areas of NSW where WIRES is licensed for wildlife rescue and care. As a prospective volunteer, having a valid driver's license and access to your own vehicle is essential for attending rescues and transporting animals.
Species You Can Assist With
A diverse spectrum
Upon completion of the Rescue and Immediate Care Course, volunteers become WIRES members, ready to assist with the rescue of birds, small and large mammals, lizards, turtles, frogs and raptors. This foundational training opens doors to rescuing most wildlife, excluding snakes, monitors, and bats, which require further training and vaccinations.

After completing the Rescue and Immediate Care Course, WIRES members will be able to access a world of advanced species rescue and care training. Dive deeper into your passion by accessing specialised courses that empower you to rescue a wider range of wildlife species or learn about wildlife rehabilitation and care.
Your Involvement: A Step-by-Step Guide
Guiding Your Wildlife Journey
Enrol Below: After enrolling, access to the online Rescue and Immediate Care Course training will be granted within 2-3 working days. The enrolment period for this course is 12 months. For further information, including the course refund policy please read the Course Information Pack and FAQ's.
Flexible Learning: Dive into the eight online modules, covering essential topics including:
- Work, Health & Safety
- Species Identification
- Common Rescue Scenarios
- Safe Handling Techniques
- First Aid
- Physical Examination
- Immediate Care
Workshop Component: Complete the online theory (6-8 hours) before registering for and attending a one-day face-to-face workshop. An alternative online practical workshop option is available to participants unable to attend a face-to-face workshop. Rescue and Immediate Care Workshop schedule.
Your Wildlife Community Awaits: Upon successful completion, the WIRES membership team will contact you and provide details about your local branch. With the support and guidance of your branch species coordinators, begin attending rescues.
